GEOMETRY SUCCESS IN 20 MINUTES A DAY

Geometry-success in 20 minutes a day
I am a homeschooling mother of 2 high school students. I have been teaching geometry but with great difficulty. It has been 30 years since I have taken geometry and it was not a happy experience then and a struggle now. We do use a regular textbook but they are not always as clear a I would like them to be. I have been using this book as a back up in teaching the basics. They are clearly presented and easy to grasp. Each chapter presents a concept with self tests to make sure you understand before you go on the the next idea. It is a great suppliment to our textbook and a good review for the GED test.

Globalization in Question: The International Economy and the Possibilities of Governance
Published in Paperback by Polity Pr (March, 1996)
Authors: Paul Hirst and Grahame F. Thompson
Average review score:

Antidote for the globalist myth
The authors make this "Globalization In Question" a great antidote for people (especially in the Business and Administration area) that can't stop repeating that "the world is globalized, the world is globalized" like parrots. It's very pleasing to have some kind of skepticism about this whole discussion. In countries of the Third World, this talk about globalization is particularly dangerous since glued to it comes the neoliberal talk. And don't be scared by all the "economics". After reading this one, I can garantee that you will pay more attention to the books you're buying about the "global world".

The God of the Gospel of John
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (October, 2001)
Author: Marianne Meye Thompson
Average review score:

Who is God in John?
Thompson is a master scholar, elucidating the concept and experience of God in the Gospel of St John. She posits that God the Father is the main subject of the gospel, and taht only in relation to the Father is Jesus properly understood as the one who is "with God" and "is God". An interesting analysis of the Paraclete reveals that the Spirit is not some sort of replacement for the risen Christ, but one of the Father's "two hands".

This is really a needed work. She is right in stressing the fact that approaching God by means other than the Father can distort John's purpose. For he uses Jesus as the person who revales the face of the Father to us. There is a tendancy in exegesis to hold orthodox positions (i.e., that Jesus is actually God equal to the Father) for the wrong reasons, thus leaving orthodoxy open to criticisms that really are unfounded. Thompson's book is a needed corrective in this regard. Enjoy this great book!

Thompson's other great books, The Promise of the Father and The Incarnate Word are really worth looking into. For another defense of Christ's full divinity, see Jesus As God by Harris (although he may need THompson's corrective in a few places, but those are places for you to find!).

Going All the Way: Teenage Girls' Tales of Sex, Romance, and Pregnancy
Published in Paperback by Hill & Wang Pub (November, 1996)
Author: Sharon Thompson
Average review score:

Over 400 interviewed girls can't be wrong!
There are a lot of new books out now (March 2002) on teenage girls and sex. This one, I hope will remain the classic. Thompson is an exceptional researcher and not just another journalist with an interesting idea. Her analysis is provocative but also very useful. I write about her work in my book, The Secret Lives of Girls, which is about 6-12 year old girls, not teens, and agree with her that a teenager girl's as well as a pre-teen girl's view of love and romance make her especially vulnerable today.

Goldmine British Invasion Record Price Guide (Serial)
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (September, 1997)
Authors: Tim Neely and Dave Thompson
Average review score:

Excellent Reference Work
This book finally puts it all in one place (well almost all). The British Invasion artists are listed here with their US and UK releases. The British Parlophone Beatles are here as well as obscure items such as the Bootles. Some artists are shorted in their UK listings, however. For a one-stop guide nothing beats it at the present time.

The Great Tiki Drink Book
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (July, 2002)
Authors: Jennifer Trainer Thompson and Nancy Thomas
Average review score:

Make mine a double, please.
You can be the first in YOUR neighborhood to jump on the Tiki revival with this mouthwatering slim-jim book packed with delicious sounding (and looking) Tiki drinks and nibbly go-withs. The beauty of the recipes is that they are somewhat adapted to modern taste-- not too sweet and using ingredients (like lemongrass) that our Tiki forbears probably never heard of. There are recipes for quick sour mixes, an easy and inteteresting rum glossary, tiki lore (answers just what IS tiki anyways?), great graphics and photos. Also an excellent source list for All Things Tiki. The book is fun without being condescending. Well worth the affordable ticket.

Grover Takes Care of Baby (Golden Friendly Books)
Published in Hardcover by Goldencraft (October, 1987)
Authors: Emily Thompson and Tom Cooke
Average review score:

Grover Takes Care of Baby
I liked this book personally because it had to do with babies. It made you understand how a little kid would take care of a baby. In the beginning Grover was playing ball and it rolled under a baby carriage. He noticed it was his friend Marsha and her little brother Max. So he asked her what she was doing and she said she was taking care of Max while her mom and dad went away. So, Grover said if I was babysitting my little cousin I would teach her how to climb a mountain. Battle a wild gang of lions, and everything in between. In the end his Aunt called and asked if his mom and him could watch his baby cousin. So, he ended up feeding her and babysitting her.

A Guide to Folktales in the English Language : Based on the Aarne-Thompson Classification System
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (September, 1987)
Author: D. L. Ashliman
Average review score:

Great resource that should be in most reference collections
In his book, Ashliman has collected lists of the variants of tales available in respected English language collections of fairy tales. This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to find variations from different cultures of tales such as Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. Since all of the collections are in English, the book is greatly abbreviated and easier to use than the Stith-Thompson set, although it conveniently uses the same classification system. I often have people asking for the types of lists Ashliman has thoughtfully combined in this one volume. I am always disappointed when it is not available in the reference section of a library I am using or visiting.
